Woman of the Month: tamara Derouen

At Female Executives of Texas, we are honored to spotlight Tamara Derouen as this month’s Woman of the Month—a trailblazer in healthcare, a passionate advocate for community, and a shining example of what it means to lead with purpose, resilience, and heart.

Tamara’s story begins in Seoul, South Korea, where she was born to a Black father and a Korean mother. Her multicultural heritage would go on to shape her worldview and passion for inclusion. Throughout her childhood, Tamara lived in the Philippines, Japan, and other parts of Asia, experiences that gave her a rare global perspective and deep appreciation for diverse cultures. Eventually, her journey led her to Texas, where she has proudly called San Antonio home for over 30 years.

A graduate of both St. Gerard Catholic High School and Judson High School, Tamara pursued higher education with a focus on healthcare management and pharmaceutical science. She has since built a successful career as a pharmaceutical consultant, where she uses her expertise to advocate for equitable healthcare access and promote informed patient care. Her work in the pharmaceutical industry is more than just a job—it’s a calling rooted in a desire to uplift and serve.

But Tamara’s impact stretches far beyond the healthcare sector. She is the visionary founder of Brown Girls Who Brunch – San Antonio, a platform and sisterhood that creates safe, celebratory spaces for women of color. What began as a simple idea—to gather women together over brunch—quickly grew into a movement. Through events that center connection, healing, and joy, Tamara fosters a strong community of women who support each other personally and professionally. Her mission is clear: to uplift, empower, and break barriers.

As a single mother of three, Tamara knows firsthand the complexities of balancing motherhood with ambition. She openly shares that single parenting has been one of her greatest challenges—but also one of her most meaningful roles. "There have been moments of exhaustion, uncertainty, and sacrifice," she shares. "But through perseverance and unwavering determination, I’ve learned to navigate these obstacles with strength and resilience." Her story is one of courage and intentionality—choosing growth in the face of adversity and finding strength through community and self-belief.

Tamara credits much of her strength to the support she’s received and the lessons she’s learned through trial and triumph. She encourages others to lean on their community, trust their instincts, and prioritize self-care. Her mantra is clear: obstacles are opportunities for growth.

One of her favorite quotes, by Maya Angelou, captures her philosophy perfectly: "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. "These words fuel her work, her leadership, and her commitment to rising strong—and helping others do the same.

To women looking to follow a similar path, Tamara offers this heartfelt advice: Believe in your worth and never underestimate the power of perseverance. Your experiences are your strength. Build a support system, embrace challenges as growth opportunities, and don’t be afraid to use your voice. Success is about more than personal wins—it’s about lifting others along the way.

Tamara Derouen is more than a consultant, a founder, or a mother—she’s a community builder, a resilient leader, and a powerful force of change. Her journey inspires us to stay grounded in purpose, lead with compassion, and create spaces where every woman feels seen, celebrated, and empowered.

We are proud to celebrate Tamara this month and grateful for the impact she continues to make in San Antonio and beyond.
